Pantone Color of the Year- 2014 Color Trend

Pantone Color of the Year- 2014 Color Trend

Every year I wait with anticipation for The Pantone Color of the Year to be announced. Out with the old emerald, in with the new. The 2014 Pantone color of the year is Radiant Orchid. “Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination…an enchanting harmony of fuschia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health.” – Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

While “great joy, love and health” sound GREAT for 2014, I have to admit, when I heard the color forecast I shook my head. [ I think they got it wrong this year.] I mean, isn’t orchid just another name for purple? And isn’t purple just a little too Barney…. a little too everything for home decor? That purple dinosaur ruined it for me. I haven’t worn purple or used purple in my decor since my tween years.

However, today’s orchid is all grown up and is quite sophisticated. In it’s varying depths and saturation it can be both masculine and feminine and works equally well in bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms and especially dining rooms. Here’s some of my favorite looks.

Pantone Color of the Year

Not afraid of color? Think Monochrome. Here a mix of orchid, plum and purple fill this dining room with warmth. The gold accents add to the opulence.

Pair orchid with grey or greige to add richness to a classic look. Both cool toned silver and warm toned gold metals coordinate well with this exotic color.

A deep plum added to crisp white is a fresh modern take that you won’t get tired of when next year’s color trend rolls around.

Color shy? Embrace color with a large vibrant painting. Keep the rest of the space neutral for your art to take center stage. You will have a conversation starter that may just grow on you in time. Accent pillows are another low cost, low commitment option for accessorizing with Radiant Orchid.
