Home makeovers are my favorite posts to share. Not only are they great sources of ideas and inspiration but they also motivate and empower homeowners to makeover their own spaces. Homeowners Chris & Amanda built their home in 2013 and wasted little time in making it their own.
Their great room boasted a large picture window with expansive views. The open floor plan was perfect for entertaining however the great room lacked a cohesive design that was suited to the lifestyle and needs of this family of four.
Here is the great room before. The existing fireplace and mantle did not have the presence needed to balance out the vaulted ceiling and the large picture window. There was the question of where to put the TV? Putting it over the mantel was not an option as it would be mounted too high and viewers would have to crane their necks to see it. Enter the solution- custom built in cabinetry. The TV is positioned on the right side unit to minimize glare from the window. A mixture of both open and closed shelving provides storage for media components, DVD’s and all the necessities essential to this family with young children. The addition of stacked stone carried up to the ceiling and a raised hearth give the fireplace the presence this focal point deserves. Stylish sconces on either side of the mantel add ambient lighting to highlight the mantel decor. This unit was custom built by Tennessee Wood.
Now that the fireplace and mantel have been given a face lift it’s time to address the rest of the room. I have been asked to provide my design services for a consult on this space. Woohoo! I love it!!! The homeowners have asked for affordable, kid friendly furnishings with an emphasis on comfort without sacrificing style and taste. With these considerations in mind we are looking at durable indoor/outdoor floor coverings and upholstery fabrics that will withstand the wear and tear. The main seating is by Restoration Hardware. Here’s an inspiration board I created. The neutral palette of browns, grey, and beige echo the warm wood tones and offer many home makeover options should taste’s change. On trend ikat, chevron and trellis print fabrics are fun options for the throw pillows which can be changed out inexpensively with the seasons and trends. Nesting tables are a great option for entertaining as they can be moved around when additional seating is brought in for larger groups. The reclaimed wood coffee table is simple and it’s clean design provides a visually clutter free look.
This home makeover continues to evolve as we add pieces. I will share more in a future post when the space is complete. Inspired design takes time. This great room makeover is off to a great start with the addition of built in cabinetry units. What do you think? How would you rate this space?
